The Original Highlands is a historic neighborhood founded in 1774. The land was family owned by the Preston family and in 1819 with the construction of the Louisville turnpike began creating traffic in the area. By 1871, a horse-drawn street car brought even more people to the vicinity, and created formal subdivisions. The biggest boom in development of the Original Highlands came in 1891 with the establishment of Cherokee Park. Between 1860 and 1895 most of the homes in the Original Highlands were built.
